I am a data and technology advisor. I specialize in solving difficult social and cultural problems using data and technology.

My Philosophy

Data and technology are necessary means to an end. I use technology and data in my work, but they are not the purpose. I am interested in solving social problems first and foremost, not in flashy or complex technology.

Work

I have been working on data focused, social science informed projects since 2010. My most recent work was as the head of data and tech of Liberty Shared, an anti-trafficking, anti-forced labor NGO that worked on increasing technology and data capacity for NGOs in the field. I have a special interest in work that increase accountability and improve transparency.

TIPMAP

TIPMAP is Uganda’s first database for collecting and sharing data specifically from human trafficking investigations and prosecutions. TIPMAP is a mobile-friendly case reporting application developed specifically for ODPP prosecutors working on Trafficking in Persons cases.  It provides up-to-date and consistent information on investigations and prosecutions occurring in all nineteen ODPP regions throughout Uganda. This is a project from the Human Trafficking Institute who conducted comprehensive in-country prosecutor training in counter-trafficking. I built the case system, mobile app, and data dashboards to support the data collection and reporting mechanism component of this project.

VCMS

VCMS is a victim case management system built on Salesforce that is offered to front-line NGOs to store, share and analyze client data. After obtaining a grant from the US State Department, I started this project under Liberty Shared because I witnessed many NGOs had poor record keeping and poor data management practices and this was a major stumbling block to improving practices and increasing accountability. Here is a paper I wrote on the difficulties of working with trafficking data from my experiences building VCMS and other programs.

Perpetrator Media Monitoring

The Media Monitoring system is a database that complied a range of open media sources naming individuals implicated in wildlife and human trafficking crimes around the world, contributed by NGOs in various countries in different languages. This information is then provided to financial institutions to assist with due diligence and Know Your Customer checks to avoid doing business with traffickers. This project is now run by EIA.
